The Webb Estate

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE WEBB ESTATE

West of Purley town centre lies about 260 acres which form the Webb Estate. Once farmland and now a Conservation Area, this secluded and exclusive estate has retained its tranquil atmosphere for over 90 years.

Named after William Webb, a local estate agent who bought the land in 1888, the Webb Estate derives not only its charm but also its originality from his unique approach to property development. In his book Garden First, Webb describes that approach as one based on the simple idea of 'co-operation between the architect and the gardener', and shows how the skillful management of plants can make almost any house or road attractive.  Yet despite the apparent simplicity of the principle, such was Webb's attention to detail and so imaginative the planting scheme he introduced that the roads of the estate, each with its own continuous border of flowers, shrubs or trees, are all uniquely picturesque.

It was Webb's dream to create an environment which would offer the best of country and city life, 'garden suberb for city men'. When the Croydon Municipal Tramways reached Purley in 1901, the Estate was finally within commuting distance of London, bringing his vision of an integrated landscape one step closer to reality.

The Estate was to be the work of a lifetime. It took Webb more than 30 years to perfect his design, which now animates eleven roads: Birch Lane, Farm Drive, Upper Woodcote Village, Rose Walk, Silver Lane, Furze Hill, The South Border, Briar Hill, Promenade de Verdun and Woodcote Lane.

Each of these roads is unlike the others and each makes a special contribution to the Estate which stands as a great testimony to William Webb's ideas.

Walter & Mair are proud to have completed many transactions on the Estate and are currently marketing numerous homes ranging from £845,000 to £3,500,000. Not all properties can be viewed on the website but if you would like to register your interest further information can be released. Alternatively, if you are considering selling please contact either Toby Bassett or Peter Bond where your enquiry will be dealt with the utmost discretion.
